Polio in Iowa

Iowans will be reading about the Iowa Polio Epidemic when they participate in the All Iowa Read book selection for 2007

Father with Polio victimAnyone who remembers the polio epidemic of the 1950s, or knows of someone who was affected by it, will be interested in the 2007 All Iowa read selection, Splendid Solution: Jonas Salk and Conquest of Polio by Jeffrey Kluger.  April 2005 marked the 50th anniversary of the annoucement that Jonas Salk's polio vaccine was considered safe and effective.  In addition to discussing the book, Iowans can tell their stories about the epidemic and read stories that have been submitted by other Iowan.  Iowa Polio Stores contains a form to tell your story, stories by others and photographs of polio in Iowa.
